Câu hỏi chủ đề Talk about your favorite music – IELTS Speaking Part 1

Câu hỏi 1: Do you like listening to music?

Actually, I have never seen anyone who dislike listening to music. I’m a big fan of music. Some people said that music becomes a huge distraction when they need to stay highly focused. It’s not the case for me, I usually listen to instrumental songs or podcast when I need to focus on doing something.

Câu hỏi 2: What kind of music do you listen to?

I’m not completely into any type of music specifically, I listen to the music that fit my mood. If I’m happy, I will listen to pop or hip hop. When I work out, I will blast EDM or songs with fast tempo. And if I’m sad, I will just listen on repeat to jazz .

Câu hỏi 3: When and how often do you listen to music?

I pretty much listen to music all the time except for when I’m taking shower, eating or sleeping. To put it simply, music keeps me energetic throughout the day.

Câu hỏi 4: Has the music that you listen to changed since you were young?

Not really, the older I get the more types of music I listen to. When I was younger, most of the songs on my mp3 player is Kpop songs. However, when I grow up and got the chance to study abroad and got exposed to many cultures , I listen to more types of music.

Câu hỏi 5: Have you ever been to a concert before? Or Have you ever been to a musical performance?

When I was studying in Europe, I attended a lot of concerts because most of my favorite artists hold concert in Amsterdam. However, when I came back to Vietnam, there isn’t any concert so usually I settle foran acoustic performance from cover artists in Vietnam which are still very amazing actually.

Câu hỏi 6: Have you ever learned to play a musical instrument?

Yes, as the matter of fact, I played piano for my school choir when I was in elementary. In addition, I also learned how to play guitar when in High school. I quitted both of the instruments because I don’t have time now.

Câu hỏi 7: Is music an important subject at school in your country?

Music is one of the compulsory subjects for primary and secondary students in my country. However, mainly singing is focused. We can also add some movements to make the songs more lively. Only those who are selected for the big performances are allowed to use musical instruments.

Câu hỏi 8: Did you often listen to music when you were a child?

I only started listening to music when I had my first cellphone. If I remember correctly, it was during my secondary years. I listened to songs on the radio most of the time.

Câu hỏi 9: What kinds of music are (most) popular in your country?

I believed most people in Vietnam are listening to Pop music, especially Kpop. This Korean Music industry spreaded really fast. You can hear Korean songs in pretty much every corner of this city.

Describe your favourite music band

talk about your favorite music
talk about your favorite music

You should say:

  • what music band it is
  • how do people react to the music of this band
  • when you first heard their songs/music

and explain why this is your favourite music band.

Follow-up Questions:

  • Why do people listen to music?
  • Talk about the type of international music.
  • What are some types of traditional music found in your country?
  • How does the internet affect the sales of CV, DVD and Music Albums?
  • What is more important: Traditional music or International Music? Why?

Sample 1:

I like to listen to all kinds of songs, whether they are taken from some solo albums or some famous music bands. Talking about music bands, of course, they usually have a different kind of appeal to music lovers, especially, if they are some musical bands like “Air Supply”.

By the way, “Air Supply” also happens to be my favourite music band. I first heard their songs about 15 years ago, when I still was a college student, and since then I am hooked to their music.

This famous music band is a soft rock duo, consisting of English singer-songwriter and guitarist Graham Russell and Australian lead vocalist Russell Hitchcock. Since starting their journey, Air Supply has had a succession of hits worldwide, including eight top-ten hits in the United States, in the early 1980s.  Formed in Australia in 1975, this music band has included various accompanying musicians and singers to make some of the best music in the history of soft rock.

From the very beginning as a soft rock duo, Air Supply has been popular for their love songs, and people react to these love songs very strongly and passionately because of their romantic nature and mellow sound.

Anyway, just like everybody else, I also love their acoustic music. In fact, these days, it seems to me that everyone is making acoustic versions of their old songs in order to make songs sound even better, but I don’t really think their “remakes” sound as good as the original songs, sung by Graham Russell and Russell Hitchcock.

Anyway, Air Supply is my favourite band, primarily because their songs are light, and their lyrics are rather easy-going.  Besides, I have heard very few voices as beautiful and melodious as that of Russell Hitchcock.

In fact, I would consider their songs as something I can hum to anytime and anywhere. However, the best thing, which makes “Air Supply” my favourite music band, is that when I listen to their songs, it makes me feel as if it’s just me in the room with them, and they are singing only for me.

Sample 2:

There are many music bands that I like very much but Pink Floyd is my most favourite music band. This music band is a famous music band for their music which falls under the genre progressive rock, psychedelic rock and art-rock. Though the band is not active anymore yet they are heard by millions of music lovers.

They are basically English rock band that was founded in 1965 and remained active till 1995 and reunited in 2005. I have become a big fan of this band mostly because of their distinguished philosophical lyrics, sonic experiment and mind-blowing music quality.

Pink Floyd is considered to be one of the most musically influential and commercially successful bands of all time. Their albums have been sold well over 250 million records worldwide.

Regarding the question of how people react to their music; it depends on the listener and their choice of music but people good music choice and quality lyrics choice are bound to love the songs of this band. Each of their albums got a high appraisal from the music critic and their album “The Wall” is widely known all over the world.

I have first listened to their music (most probably, songs from the album ‘Atom hearted mother’) when I was in my 10th grade in school and after that, I have listened to almost all of their songs countless times.

There are many reasons we should listen to music. It is considered to be the food of the soul. Music is refreshing and washes away the tiredness, boredom and monotonousness. Good lyrics help us brainstorm, understand things more deeply and from different perspectives, and help grow positive inspiration and motivation.

Music inspires us deeply and eliminates our boredom and narrowness in life. It is one of the best entertainments and inspirational sources for human beings.

Describe a special meal you have had

You should say:

  • Where you had it
  • Who you had it with
  • What you ate
  • And explain why it was special for you

Sample 1:

One of the most memorable meals that I have ever eaten was a couple of years ago when I was sick, well actually, just recovered from sickness. I had digestive disorder so I could not eat anything but bland porridge for a week; otherwise I would have vomited constantly. The first couple of days staying at home went just fine, I had enough to entertain me. In fact, I felt relax because I had time to binge watch my favorite drama. However, by the end of that week, I could not stand that meal. I could not even think about it. Fortunately, I was getting better so I could eat other dishes.

My mother made me spaghetti with beef and mushroom which she knew was my favourite. It was a basic Italian dish that instantly made my mood improve. It did not take much time and energy to cook though; basically, there were ground beefsliced fresh mushrooms, chopped garlic and onions served with tomato sauce and topped with Parmesan cheese. It tasted like heaven to me. The ground beef was savoury mixed with a little cheesy flavor. My mom homemade meal was not only appetizing but also nutritious because I was not consuming protein and fat for a whole week.

My mom and dad ate it too but I knew they did not enjoy it as much as I did. I tucked into it and even craved for more. This was a memorable meal thanks to the caring and loving of my mother and her eagerness to lift my spirits while I was trapped in my house.

Từ vựng trong bài:

  • digestive disorder: bệnh rối loạn tiêu hóa
  • bland (a): nhạt nhẽo
  • porridge (n): cháo
  • vomit (v): nôn mửa
  • binge watch (v): cày phim
  • stand: chịu đựng
  • made my mood improve: làm tâm trạng tôi tốt lên
  • ground beef: thịt bò xay
  • top with (v) : phủ lên trên
  • protein (n): chất đạm
  • fat (n): chất béo
  • crave for (v): thèm thuồng

Sample 2:

I love food, so it is hard to think of just one favourite sort of food!  However, if I had to choose, I can think of something that I like to have as a special treat from time to time.  I’m going to tell you what the food item is, how it is made, why I like it so much and explain to you what makes it my favourite food and maybe even convince you that you would like it just as much as well – if you haven’t already discovered it for yourself.

The food is quite simple.  I’ve always thought of it as a Greek speciality, although others tell me it actually originates from Egypt.  Can you guess what it is?  Houmous.   I love it.  The food is spelt differently in American English – they call it hummus and in British English, we spell it with an ‘o’ and a ‘u’ as opposed to just the ‘u’ but the recipe is the same in either case.

Basically, it is made from cooked, mashed chickpeas blended with tahini, olive oil, lemon juice, salt and garlic. It is popular throughout the Middle East (including Turkey), North Africa (including Morocco), and in Middle Eastern cuisine around the globe, but it is also extremely popular with me, although I’m very particular about the sort I buy.  I live near a wonderful delicatessen, it is run by a friendly couple, he is Italian and she is vintage Yorkshire.

They make their own houmous with only the finest quality virgin olive oil and huge quantities of the best fresh garlic they can get hold of.  It’s pretty expensive, but I love it, and it’s better than my own attempts for some reason, I don’t know why it shouldn’t be so hard to make.

Why do I like it?  I think it is partly the texture, and partly the taste, I love garlic.  Also, because I’m vegetarian it is a very healthy food, with lots of protein and quality fats that are good for you.  Of course, you can have too much of a good thing, but I think it’s well worth it.

It is my favourite food not only because it is absolutely delicious, but also because you can share it with other people.  It is best eaten as a dip, with friends.  I cut up lots of carrots, cucumber and celery into crudités carefully sliced to make a colourful dish, perhaps with some slices of warm pitta bread too.  A nice bottle of white wine helps.  We can then all sit together enjoying the fresh humous dip, sipping our glasses of wine and laughing and talking to put the world to rights.  It is a great way to enjoy a fabulous food item.

Sample 1:

I used to watch a lot of TV programs but not anymore because I just don’t have enough time to watch TV. However, there is one that I’d like to talk about: it’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine. It’s a comedy-crime related program starring Andy Samberg, Terry Crews and many others.

The main theme surrounds a police precinct in Brooklyn and their detectives and officers. The format and content of each episode is pretty similar to other TV film series: episodic stories, serialized arcs. But what makes it amazing is that it’s simple and is a perfect combination between witty humor , friendship, love and amazing crime fighting stories. With Brooklyn nine nine, it’s so hard to figure out who your favorite character because they’re all so different and unique.

I don’t get a chance to watch it everyday because of work but when I have time, I will always binge watch the whole season. If I have to rank it, I’d put Brooklyn Nine-Nine as my number 1.

One of the reasons for me to like this show so much is that it’s very simple, no drama, no confused plot twists . It was funny and sweet and well-made. Not to mention Andy Samberg, one of the most talentedcomics of his generation, played the lead. They are currently on season 6 and I can’t wait to watch more of it.

Sample 2:

Among many programs and channels available on TV these days such as the current news programs, sport programs, entertaining programs, educational programs and movie programs, etc., I like the program “the World of Animals” most.

This program is usually shown on VTV2 everyday at 8.30 in the evening. It often lasts about 45 minutes. In this program, stories of the life of many animals in the world are told in a very lively way.

For example, people can watch films about monkeys, snakes, tigers, insects, birds, sea turtles, sharks etc. … and even the penguins and the polar bears in the far North. While watching these films, I find the everyday life activities and habits of these animals very interesting and full mysteries.

In addition, I also learn that it is very important to protect these animals and their living environments became they are part of our valuable natural world. Watching this program makes me very well informed and relaxed after a day of work.

Talk about your favorite subject

English is one of my favorite subject, so I always get excited when I learn English, but Mr. David makes it even more interesting. He doesn’t teach us in a boring way, he tries to make the lesson into an interactive and a very fun lesson. He is very friendly and creative, and also very nice. That’s why everybody in my class loves him.

You should say:

  • what is it
  • why you like/liked it
  • your experience of this subject

and explain why it is/was your favourite subject.

Sample 1:

Being a student of science, I have always wondered what would have happened if “Physics” as a faculty of science didn’t exist. Well, one thing for sure is that we wouldn’t have got the theory of relativity and Gravity, to name only two out of many, which have practically changed our views of the world as well as our “lives” itself. But, as I took my educational journey to a university and got the opportunity to learn “the subject” of Einstein and Newton in more details, I didn’t really need to wonder anymore.  I liked physics during my student life probably more than any other subjects.

I liked it not only because I was good at it, but also because of my fond memories and experiences of this subject. Spending many, many hours of learning fundamental theories of physics in the classrooms together with even more hours at a physics lab, I have learnt to understand that physics probably and potentially is the most satisfying of all the main science subjects as this difficult subject tends to explain why and how things happen in this material world.

Having learnt about circular motion, waves, gravity, energy, force, electricity and much more, as a student, I could certainly feel myself as being little “smarter” than others, who were not the students of “science”.  Whether I was experimenting with Newton’s “law of motion” or “law of gravitation” in a lab, I always felt like I was a “scientist” in my own little lab.

I enjoyed learning this interesting subject mainly because I could actually engage myself on an intellectual level with not only the teachers but also with my fellow students. Besides, in a physics class, more often than not, I would be one of the few lucky students to be requested to the class board in order to explain some of the difficult topics of physics whether they were related to the laws of thermodynamics or quantum physics.

And I loved being challenged by a very interesting branch of science that represented a complete purity of thoughts without having to worry about any religion, politics, human psychology or any other ambiguous human variables for that matter.

Sample 2:

History was my favourite subject in my academic life. I have learned so many things from history books and started realising how important it is for us to know our past to build the future. I learned a lot from my history teachers and they were excellent tutors who always motivates us. I was so fascinated about my experience of reading and learning the history that it was my major in my university.

Learning about the past is something that gives us essential knowledge about our country, heritage, the world we live in and about the human race as a whole. It also warns us about past catastrophic events and motivates us to build a better world. I took history seriously for the first time when I was in grade 7 and I found it intriguing.

I learned about the ancient world, how the social and economic conditions were then and how the world has been shaped by the different events throughout the time. I liked it more than any other subject in my school. I could actually relate things I learned from my history textbooks, and this was not the case for a few other subjects that we were taught at that time. So I really liked history as a subject. I developed an uncanny attraction towards it and tried to read as many history books as possible back then.

After that, I become so interested in this subject that I started reading books on History by different writers. There is a famous saying that “To shape the future you must know the past”, and history teaches us that. I had been lucky to have some great teachers who have a tremendous way of explaining the topics of history. To me, other subjects like literature and math were also interesting but I felt a different passion for history as a subject.

After I finished school, I took history as my major and that has greatly influenced me the way I look at the world and to the past and the future. Reading and learning history was like travelling through time and generations and that excited me so much. To be honest it still does. I fell in love with this subject and it became my favourite subject soon.

Sample 3:

This is indeed a great topic to talk about and the credit goes to you for allowing me the time to think and talk about it.

Math has always been my favourite subject in my school days and my interest in math helped me profoundly to understand other science-related subjects more accurately. I have recently graduated from computer science and I could not have been a good programmer without my understanding and love for mathematics. Academic subjects like statistics, algorithm, data structure and programming are hard to learn without someone’s command in mathematics.

I liked mathematics because I was good at it! My father is an architect and I have always felt curious about his passion for mathematics and architectural design. In my academic years, I was not a top scorer, but my grades in maths were always high. I remember spending more hours solving mathematical problems than memorising poems and reading literature. Thus when I was in high school, I was good at maths and it’s natural that I spent more time doing maths than other subjects.

My father has a great influence in developing my interests for maths. He painstakingly explained mathematical formulas, their usage and practical implications to me and thus I started loving this subject from my early childhood. I was lucky to have some great teachers during my academic years who also were my motivation to do well in mathematics.

I could solve mathematics as I had a solid foundation in it from my childhood. I was often asked by my class teachers to explain a certain math problem to them. This also grew my confidence and in high school, I was persuaded that I can solve any math problems from our textbooks. As you know, young people often like the subject they are good at and spend more time reading and understanding it. This was also the case for me and math has always been my favourite subject in my academic years.

Bài mẫu IELTS Speaking Part 2: Iron Man in Avengers: Endgame

The Marvel Cinematic Universe introduces a lot of amazing characters but when it’s all said and done , I think Iron Man is my all-time favorite superhero in the Marvel films. Iron Man appears in every Avengers movies and I believe he shines the most in the most recent one: Avengers: Endgame.

To put it simply, Iron Man is a rich billionaire who was an arrogant and entitled person until he went through a lot of hardship and started using his resources to protect Earth and to become a better person. He is extremely intelligent . He built an armor suit to combat with superhuman or aliens with superpower fairly! Can you believe it, he’s just a human!

One of the reasons I love this character is that he’s probably the only one whose characteristics changed for the better over the course of time. Other superheroes are basically just good guys from the start. Iron Man was selfish and nobody liked him but going through all the ups and downs, he turned into a lovable and kind person who ultimately sacrificed himself using the 6 infinity stones and the infinity gauntlet to save the entire universe from the edge of extinction . Another reason is that he has a sarcastic humor which I enjoy a lot.

The character of Iron Man has influenced me in many ways. He shows me that everyone can become a better person by putting aside their ego to strive for a greater good. He also teaches us all the value ofpatriotism and the importance of standing up for one’s own country. And of course, Iron man proves that there will always be light at the end of the tunnel if you keep on pushing .

Bài mẫu IELTS Speaking Part 2: The final fight in The Avengers: Endgame

I’m sorry if I’m spoiling but my favorite movie moment is the final battle between the Avengers and Thanos army in the Marvel movie: The Avenger: Endgame. This is the latest installment of The Marvel Cinematic Universe. It concludes a whole epic journey of lots of beloved characters in the movie.

The main plot line of the Avengers: Endgame is the fight between Thanos, a powerful alien , and the Earth protectors, the Avengers who consists of famous superheroes like Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, Hawkeye, the Hulk to name a few. Avengers: Endgame is a celebration of the characters creatures and weapons that have been introduced throughout the Marvel cinematic Universe.

I have three words to describe my favorite moment in the movie: epic suspenseful and moving. Every superheroes in the previous movies all showed up to fight against the mighty army of the evil Thanos. Thecinematography was amazingly made, the movie soundtrack and the action sequences gave me goosebumps and the final moment when Iron Man defeated Thanos was just too emotional .

The battle was my favorite moment of the entire movie because it’s the final fight that concludes the whole roller coaster ride from previous Marvel movies. As a hardcore fan , everything about Endgame was amazing and satisfying to watch. I will definitely watch it again even though it’s 3 hours long.

  • Who you watched it with .

=> And explain why it is your favorite movie.

Bài mẫu IELTS Speaking Part 2: The Avengers: Endgame

My favorite movie and also the one I’d like to check out again is The Avengers: Endgame. It’s an Superhero fictional movie starring Robert Downey Jr, Scarlett Johansson and many more. It was actually a final movie which conclude the whole journey full of joy and sorrow .

I remember watching it for the first time in 2019, shortly after it hit the big screen . My girlfriend was also my movie buddy on that day. She was not a big fan of superhero movies but since The Avengers: Endgame was the biggest Marvel movie so far and everyone was watching and talking about it, she decided to give it a try.

This movie far exceeded our expectations . The plot was about a group of superhero trying to protect not only the Earth but also other planets from the brink of destruction from the evil antagonist Thanos and his army. It was a happy ending, but there were so many heart-breaking scenes particularly the death of some of my favorite characters. It also has stunning cinematography and catchy soundtrack

About why I like it and want to re-watch it, I guess the main reason is the witty screenwriting . It kept me on the edge of my seat the entire 3 hours watching it, the shortest 3 hours of my life!. There isn’t any unforgivable p lot holes and the actors and actresses played their roles masterfully . That is all I want to san sẻ about this movie, thanks for listening.

talk about your favorite food

Talk about your favorite food; hoặc What is your Favorite Food?. You should say:

  • What the food is;
  • What it is made of;
  • Why you like it.

=> And explain why it is your favorite food.

Bài loại Talk about your favorite food

Sample 1:

Well, I’m a food lover so this question is extremely difficult, I cannot pick just one! But if I have to, I’d say Bánh Cuốn or steamed rolled pancakes is my favorite food that I would like to talk about today.

Bánh Cuốn is a popular option for diners in Viet Nam. As the matter of fact, among the well-known offerings of Saigon street food, Bánh Cuốn is consistently ranked a top choice. I believe this dish originates from the Northern region of Vietnam, the exact date and time it was first made are unknown but it seems hard to deny that Bánh Cuốn has been made for years.

Basically, Bánh Cuốn looks like a soft spring roll filled with meat. However, the recipe is much more complicated than that. You start with a steamed rice roll cooked on a pot which is covered by a thin fabric. Until the rice roll is very thin, it will then be scrapped off the pot with a bamboo stick. After that, the roll is filled with a mixture of pork, wood ear mushrooms, onions, and fish sauce.

This is my favorite dish among thousands of amazing food in Vietnamese cuisine because it is perfectly enough. From the smell to the taste, everything is just enough to make your mouth watering . This is my favorite breakfast and maybe even dinner for many Vietnamese. It is a quick and delicious day starter.

Sample 2:

I’m going to talk about tuna salad, which is one of my favourite foods. Actually, I love all kinds of salad, but if I had to choose one to talk about, I would choose this one.

There are various recipes for tuna salad. For example, some people who love avocado would put it into their salad, while some would eat their salad with chickpeas. I like it my way, so I’m going to tell you how I make my salad.

First, we need some lettuce, red tomatoes, red onions and cucumbers. Then, we need to cut them into tiny pieces and put them in a bowl. Then, pour in some olive oil and some vinegar, and add some seasoning. After that, mix them together and let the mixture stand for about 15 minutes while we prepare the tuna.

For the tuna, I always have some canned tuna in my fridge. What I do is that I add the fish to the mixing bowl I prepared earlier. Then, I mix them altogether. I usually add three tablespoons of mayonnaise and two tablespoons of chopped almonds because they provide me with more protein.

It’s very simple to prepare a classic tuna salad, but it tastes so good. And it’s very healthy because of the veggies you add to your salad. I often have it for breakfast because I don’t have much time to prepare a big meal in the morning. Sometimes, I eat it as a sandwich for lunch.

So, tuna salad is one of my favourite foods.

Mẫu 3:

Bài mẫu Describe your favorite sport

Sample 1:

I would like to talk about a sport that I particularly enjoy and have been practising for a few years. It is basketball. For me, this is not only a sport or a physical exercise but also an ideal way for me to relieve of stress and to make new friends.

I first knew about basketball when I was a little kid through a video game called NBA 2k8. However, at that time I did not play badminton at all, partly because I was not an active kid who was aware of the critical importance of physical exercises. When I went to high school, a lot of my friends were a big fan of basketball and my high school offered big playgrounds for sports activities, therefore I practised basketball much more often.

I usually play basketball in the weekends and watch NBA on the nights when my favorite team, the Los Angeles Lakers play. I often go to sports centres with a number of my classmates for basketball matches. Sometimes we even participate in local league, didn’t accomplish anything big but it was extremely fun.

For me, basketball is a good way to help me pursue a healthy lifestyle. It is also an affordable type of sport as you do not have to buy a lot of specialised sports materials. Finally, playing basketball enables me to develop a number of important and non-academic skills such as discipline, team-work, problem-solving and co-operation.

Talk about your hobby

Vì vậy, hãy cùng Tuhocielts tìm hiểu chủ đề Talk about your hobby thú vị này nhé!

Adjectives to Describe Hobbies

talk about your hobby
talk about your hobby

These are some useful adjectives to describe your interest or hobby:

fun relaxing quiet harmless
personal lifelong enjoyable different
interesting creative good exercise outdoor
passionate intellectual dangerous odd
exciting useful time-consuming satisfying
amateur lucrative artistic indoor

Questions to Ask Someone About Their Hobbies

The first thing you need to understand is the question someone could ask you about your hobbies or interests.

There are several ways someone could ask you this question so let’s take a look at them.

  • What do you like to do in your free time?
  • Do you have any hobbies?
  • What are your interests?
  • What do you like doing at the weekend?
  • What do you like to do?

First, I should tell you I am from England and English people rarely use the word ‘hobbies’. It sounds a little old-fashioned these days. People often use the word ‘interests’ to replace hobbies.

So it could be any of the above questions.

I think these are fairly simple to understand.

How to Reply

But there is a larger range of ways of replying to these questions.

People usually indulge in their interests in their free time or spare time. This is a time when we are not working or studying. Often it could be at the weekend and in the evenings.

So one by one we can use these phrases like this:

In my free time, I like to…

  • In my free time, I like to play football
  • In my free time, I go swimming
  • In my free time, I prefer to read

At the weekend I like….

  • At the weekend I like cooking
  • At the weekend I like to do the gardening

I like to …

  • I like to go dancing
  • I like to make wine

I enjoy…

  • I enjoy drawing
  • I enjoy hiking

I am into …

(This means that you like something very much)

  • I am into comics
  • I am into website design
  • I’m into gaming

Examples of Hobbies

Each country has its own culture and therefore the people will have different interests and hobbies. Some of these interests are universal such as playing the piano, going to the gym or drawing. But many others are unique to the country itself.

Below is a selection of typical interests and hobbies in England.

playing the piano jogging
painting gardening
cooking drawing
bowling making websites
collecting coins bird watching
hiking dancing
knitting making jam
brewing beer model trains

Exercise

Go through all of these hobbies and interests and look the words up in a dictionary.

Does your country share any of the same hobbies as above?

Make a list of interests that people in your country like to do in their free time. Write a few sentences about each one if you can.

Talking About Interests in Detail

When we talk about our interests, there are two things we can do.

talk about your hobby
I like to play football with my friends

Describe what the hobby is

And then say why you like it

So, for example, someone who likes football might say something like this:

I like to play football at the weekend with my friends. We have a small club and we get together and play a game of football. Nothing serious just for fun, really.

But we like it because it is good fun and we can all have a laugh together plus it is good exercise and gets us out of the hous

In the first sentence, the speaker says what the interest is, when he does it and who with. He then goes on further to explain that he and his friends are members of a small local football club.

He says that is it Nothing serious just for fun really — this means that no one takes the football club very seriously. They are not trying to be professional football players. They just want to have some fun.

He then goes on to explain why they do it. He repeats that it is fun and they can all have a laugh together — this is another way to say that it is good fun. Then he mentions that playing football is good exercise — another reason why he plays football.

And lastly he says it gets us out of the house — this means that it is good to leave the house. Staying indoors all day is considered an unhealthy thing to do.

Let’s look at another example.

I am an avid reader and every weekend you can find me with my nose in a book. There is nothing I like better than curling up with a good book in my favourite armchair and losing myself in whatever world the book is set in.

I love reading because I can enter other worlds and meet all these amazing characters. I love seeing all of the scenes play out in my imagination.

This speaker talks about her deep interest in reading.

She says she is an avid reader — this means she loves reading and has a very strong desire for reading.

She goes on to say that every weekend you can find me with my nose in a book — this means that if we were to find her we could see her reading. She also uses the phrase curling up with a good book in my favourite armchair, to describe in more detail her love for reading. She likes to sit in an armchair curled up in a ball so that she is comfortable.

The speaker mentions the world the book is set in because the setting in the book is not like the real world.

She then explains why she likes reading and talks about other worldsamazing characters and seeing all the scenes play out in her imagination.

This is what you need to do when talking about your hobby or interest.

You need to go into deeper detail of what the interest is and where and when you do this hobby. And are you alone or with friends?

Then talk about why you like it. Try to think of three reasons why you like this special hobby of yours.

Like Doing vs Like To Do

We often use these two phrases when talking about our interests and hobbies. Or to describe things we like to do or things we like doing.

Like + gerund – I like swimming

Like + infinitive – I like to swim

Loosely speaking, you can use either of these expressions. Each one has the same meaning.

How to Talk at Length About Your Hobbies

If you are asked about your hobbies in the IELTS test for Part Two, then you will have to talk about your hobby or interest at length. The same if you are asked this question in an interview for college or a job interview.

You need to think about how to talk about the things you like to do and how to speak for a long time. This is where all the English question words can help you.

Think about the question words whatwherewhenwhywho and how.

What – I like to paint

Where – in my shed in the garden

When – at the weekend and whenever I have spare time

Why – I just lose myself in the moment, it is very relaxing and time just flies by

Who – by myself it is a very solitary hobby

How often – whenever I can!

And then you can put all of this together and it might look like this:

I like to paint in my free time. I can’t paint in the house because my parents say it is too messy, all the paint and oil, so I use the shed in our garden. I can sit in there and no one disturbs me.

I usually paint at the weekend and after school, I like to paint whenever I have some spare time.

I like painting because I can just lose myself in it, I just get lost in the moment and forget time completely. It is very relaxing and time just flies by very quickly.

I like to spend time on my own and paint. I like to be able to think and be quiet. I like to be on my own and think.

I try to paint whenever I can but I have exams coming up so I don’t have as much free time any more. But after my exams, I will probably get back into it.

Exercise

Now you try.

Use all the question words and ask yourself questions about your hobby or interest. Interview yourself about your hobby and when you have all the answers put them together into one long talk.

Then recite it out to yourself.

Describe Feelings About the Hobby

First of all, let’s look at some words we can use to describe how we feel about something in English.

angry happy scared surprised
shy cold tired depressed
confident cautious bored worried
frustrated sad embarrassed satisfied
patient lonely comfortable exhausted

I think you probably know how to use these words to describe general emotional states you might have on different days, but you can also use them when talking about your interests.

talk about your hobby
I like rock climbing because it is dangerous

Let me show you how.

We played a game of cricket against another local team but we lost terribly. I was kind of angry even though it’s only a game. I just felt frustrated because we had practiced for so long.

Our band played live for the first time last week. We were all really nervous, but it went pretty well. I think we were all surprised by how much the crowd liked us.

get frustrated with my efforts sometimes when I am doing pottery. I look at the results and think it looks terrible but then I remind myself that I am still learning.

If I spend too much time on my own, I get lonely so it’s nice to meet the others in our choir and practice two or three times a week.

You can use many of the words above to describe how you feel about your hobby and how it makes you feel when you are doing it.

Exercise

Try to use all the words above and the examples and make your own sentences.

Describe your feelings about your hobby and how you feel when you are doing it.

Describe Opinions About the Hobby

Here are some useful phrases you can use to describe your opinion about your interest.

In my opinion… In my experience…
I believe that… I am certain/convinced that…
Personally speaking… In my experience…
I have the feeling that… I am not sure/certain, but…
It goes without saying that… Personally, I think…
I don’t know about other people, but I think… I have no doubt that …
I am sure / I am certain that… I really believe that…
In my point of view… As far as I know…
As far as I am concerned… Some people say…

You can use these to express opinions about your interest.

Let’s look at some examples:

In my opinion, doing yoga is a very good thing to do. It can really help you relax and we all need to do that in modern society.

Personally speaking, I think that cooking is a very useful hobby. After all, everyone needs to eat and everyone likes to eat delicious food.

I really believe that going to the gym can help you live a long and healthy life. As we get older we need to have more strength to do daily things in our life.

As far as I’m concerned, doing carpentry is a very rewarding and satisfying hobby. I have made some really beautiful chairs and a bookcase for our home.

Conclusion

You could be asked to talk about your hobbies or interests in Part Two of the IELTS speaking test. Or in an interview for college or a job interview.

In this situation, you will need to talk at length about what you like to do in your free time.

The important points to remember are:

  • To talk about the hobby in detail
  • And say why you like it — you should try to give three reasons if you can

But also do the following:

  • Describe your feelings about the interest — how do you feel when you do it?
  • Describe your opinions about it — the more opinions you have the better
  • And to tell a story about it

If you can cover some of these points, then you should give a very solid answer when talking about your hobbies and interests.
